This weekend I was in Bowling Green, KY for a family reunion. This was for family on my mom’s side. It was an excellent weekend and great to meet family I hadn’t seen for quite awhile. Actually, the last time I saw most of them was at my grandmother’s funeral 4 years ago. But then it wasn’t everyone including kids and 3rd and 4th cousins, etc.
We went to Beech Bend Park on the banks of the Barren River for our reunion. We had an air-conditioned building to enjoy each other’s company and hear stories while we ate some delicious bar-b-que. The rest of the afternoon we spent at the waterpark/amusement park. I used to take a little bit of an offense when people would make comments about “Kentucky” since that’s where I’m from, and still proud to be from. But, this weekend confirmed that many of the jokes weren’t too far off from reality. It’s just a completely different culture back “home” nowadays.
On Saturday, I went with my cousin Milt to pick up his daughter. She was in Owensboro (the real place for bar-b-que) for a softball tournament. Good timing since it worked out so well for her to be close to Bowling Green, but too bad that the only reason she was able to join us on Saturday was because her team lost on Friday night. Anyway, she’s a pitcher and will be starting her freshman year at the University of Arkansas as a starting pitcher for the Ladybacks Softball team. You can read an article about her here.
Luckily, I had brought my glove so I could play catch with my son over the weekend, so I was able to experience what it’s like to catch a ball from a fast-pitch softball first round draft pick! The force of the pitch wasn’t too bad, except that I’m trying to catch it with a fielder’s glove instead of a catcher’s mitt. BUT! It’s the speed (duh!) it’s coming at you. By the time you realize it’s left her hand, in it’s your glove.
So, needless to say I’ll be setting my TiVo to record any Razorback softball games that may be televised.
