A Night in the ER

I didn’t have a very enjoyable night last night.

Around 11:00pm, while working on the computer, I started to have some pain in my upper abdomen, right under the bottom of my right ribcage. I layed down around 12:30am but could never get to sleep. The pain became much more intense, about a 9 on the pain scale for me in my life.

I thought maybe it was gas or indigestion and got up to use the bathroom and even try to have a little techni-color yawn to make it feel better. No luck. This will make me sound like a mama’s boy, but I called my mom around 2:30am to get her diagnosis. She has been a medical transcriptionist almost my entire life and honestly could probably diagnose patients on par with Dr. Gregory House.

So, I woke up my wife and told her I was going to the ER. With two small children asleep in their beds, I told her there was no need for her to go with me, I’d be okay.

Almost 4 hours later, blood & urine tests, x-rays and an exam by the ER doc, I was sent home with some pain medication and told to schedule an abdominal ultrasound, which I did and will be tomorrow morning at 7:30am.

After speaking with my mom and a friend, and reading a little bit online, I believe I passed a gall stone. Given some of the other symptoms I’ve experienced last night and in the previous month, it all seems to make sense now.

I’ll let you know if I end up having a surgery scheduled for my future.

If you've enjoyed what you've read, you can show your appreciation by buying me a cup of coffee.

Sounds like me and my appendectomy last summer. I wound up driving myself to the ER, too, so Kerri didn’t have to wake the kids. Glad you’re feeling better.

Now that’s a bad way to spend an evening/morning! Hope you’re feeling better…let me know how the ultrasound goes…if you passed a boy or a girl!?

I hope you are feeling better, I just now read this this morning. I was in the ER Sunday night for chest pain and shortness of breath and they checked everything out, bloodwork, ekg etc. My heart is healthy and they concluded that they think I have acid reflux. I go for a stress test this afternoon to completely rule out any heart issues.

I learned the way to get right in at the ER is to say ‘I have chest pain’, they take you right back. Next trip to the ER, I think I’ll say I have chest pain…..oh yeah and can you stitch up my finger while I’m back there. Otherwise you have to wait for hours.
