Making Nashville Home Again

Nashville Skyline from LP Field Stadium

It's been a little while now since my family and I have made our home in Nashville. I came down in March, ahead of my wife and two kids and they were finally able to move down in July when we found a rental house in Lebanon. Lebanon isn't quite a suburb of Nashville, but it's only about 30 miles east of downtown Nashville. I'm doing freelance work for a company creating buzz by specializing in social media and marketing based in Franklin, "A Small-Town Gem Near Nashville", which is and about 45 miles away from me. Luckily I get to work from home the majority of the time, but I'm usually making that drive about once a week. The nice thing is that I can usually make the trip in about an hour, which compared to how long it took me to get from the east side of Indy to our home on the south side is about the same drive time.

There's no denying, the city and the suburbs around it have definitely changed in the years since I lived here after college and before moving to Indianapolis to get married and start a family. I tried to convince my wife she should move to Franklin with me back then. I like to think I won that argument, it just took me 16 years to do it.

It's been a good move for us. It's brought us together as a family since we've all kind of had to start over with all-new friendships. I've got a number of friends still in the area, but I've yet to reconnect with many of them. I've extremely thankful for two that allowed me to live with them for the 4 months I was down here by myself. Their hospitality and generosity will not be forgotten. The friendships I have here have given us the help and support we've needed to get ourselves settled, but haven't overly influenced or restricted us from really establishing a whole new network of our own for our family.

We're all still settling in. Some of us faster than others. I've already been able to enjoy a variety of experiences, from seeing Joe Bonamassa in concert at the Ryman Auditorium, to catching a Pomplamoose concert with Kim at The Mercy Lounge. I get to go fishing frequently on Old Hickory Lake with my friend and when my son is willing to get up at 5:30am to go with us he's joined in as well. He and I have also gone zip-lining at Adventureworks in Kingston Springs with friends from Indy when they were in town. My daughter and I have taken advantage of some of the Nashville Greenways already as well. We've visited and hiked a variety of state parks in the area, all of which are free to access, we've seen and hiked Bledsoe Creek State Park and Fall Creek Falls and we'll visit Cedars of Lebanon and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park soon. And, you know it wouldn't be a post from me without talking about some great places to eat. Some of our favorites already are: Demos' in Lebanon, Courtney's in Mt. Juliet, Martin's BBQ, Snow White Drive-in, Taco Mamacita, The Loveless Cafe, Grays on Main in Franklin, Noshville, Bricktop's,  The Farm House, Barista Parlor, CREMA and The Pied Piper Eatery.

So, that's about it I guess. Probably not, but about all I'll share for now. Stay tuned. More to come later as we continue to explore and set down some southern roots.

Here are some interesting articles I just found this evening about Nashville. If you know me from my time in Indianapolis, you'll know I'm eager to experience all of these things and try these restaurants myself very soon!

Mother’s Day Is Over Don’t Forget Mom

Disclaimer:
I participated in an Ambassador Activation on behalf of Dad Central for the Northwestern Mutual Foundation. I received a promotional item to thank me for participating.

Mother's Day is now over. Hopefully you were able to spend some time with your mom or give her a call and talk to her on the phone. For those that have lost your mother, then I hope your day was spent remembering the lady she was and hopefully the strength and support she provided to you and your family in your home. I'd like to provide a little recognition to two wonderful moms in my own life. The first is my own mom and then there's my wife, the wonderful mother of our two children. They both have done some amazing things for their families and myself over the years. We should really honor our moms much more than on Mother's Day, and they deserve so much more from us than just a card, some flowers and a box of chocolates perhaps.

I'm writing this post for a few different reasons. My primary reason is that these two women in my life deserve some amazing credit and accolades for everything they've done. The other reason is that I'm participating in this program from Northwestern Mutual where they're trying to get people to talk about and honor their own "heroic" moms. The goal is to share those pictures of your mom and honor them on social media like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and using the hashtag #MyHeroMom. The great news about this effort is that it's not just some "selfie" that's going to be floating around the Internet with a picture of you and your wonderful mom, but for every image upload, share, tweet and retweet of content with that hashtag, Northwestern Mutual  Foundation is donating $5 to Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF), up to the max of $50,000 to help fund childhood cancer research.

MyHeroMomMy Hero Mom

First, I've got to thank my own Mom. If it weren't for her, well, I wouldn't be here. That alone should be enough for celebration right? My mom has been a tremendous influence in my life. She has been a working mom during the entire time of my childhood and never failed to be there when needed and did everything she could to make she we had everything we needed as well. She's been an incredible example of hard working and determined and always pushed my brothers and I to excel in everything we did. Although I was much younger back then I remember when we had a scare of her having cancer. I wasn't quite old enough to understand all the ramifications of the situation at hand, but I saw my mom push through and persevere through surgery and was the model of strength and determination to win that battle and continue to be here for her family. Thanks Mom!

MyHeroWifeMy Hero Wife

My second #MyHeroMom is my own wife. She has been a tremendous support for the 15 years we've been married, but especially so over the last couple of months as we go through a significant change in our life together. Our family is in essence homeless and unemployed currently. While I've been pursuing full-time work in Nashville, TN, she's been back in Indianapolis living with my parents and fulfilling the role of virtual single mom in my absence. She has been amazing through all of this time. I've never felt more support and encouragement from my wife during this time and she continues to do an amazing job of raising and homeschooling our two children in our separation from each other during this time. She truly has been doing a heroic effort to maintain some sense of normalcy in our family while nothing is even close to normal right now. For that I owe her everything! Kim, you are amazing and I don't deserve you!

Take a moment now and keep the accolades flowing for that special mom in your life too! Don't let them just feel special on Mother's Day, help them understand and feel how important they are in your life by telling them again today and tomorrow. Share a picture your own #MyHeroMom to your favorite social network and sing her praises to the world! If your favorite network is Facebook, you can use the #MyHeroMom Facebook App to share you own photo.

Travel Trip A Mileage

A friend of mine recently asked for some suggestions about a family vacation in Orlando. Since I've been going to Orlando with my family at least once a year for about the last 5 years I figured I had some good ideas to share with her. I also remembered I had written about some of our adventures on a couple of other travel sites. I was trying to find those posts and discovered that they redesigned their site and my posts weren't quite as easy to find anymore. It's too bad, in the migration to the new site they broke all the images to the posts I had included.

So, here they are:

  • Our First "Just Family" Disney Vacation on Experience Kissimmee (12/07/2010)
  • Kennedy Space Center is Out of This World on Experience Kissimmee (12/13/2010)
