Okay, this has gotten beyond one of those little life annoyances and has escalated to almost soap box pet peeve status. I can not figure out how in the world to turn off the ability for people to try and buddy list me in Yahoo Messenger chat. I’ve hidden my status, I’ve blocked anyone not on my friends list already, or only allowed those in my address book. Nothing seems to do the trick. I still get about five notifications a day that someone “has requested to add you to their online list.”
STOP IT!
If anyone has a solution for exactly how I can configure my settings and preferences in Yahoo Mail!, Yahoo Messenger, or my Yahoo account as a whole to no longer accept or see these requests, please, please, please leave me a comment and let me know.

Geez. Nobody huh?
Guess this is just the push I need to say GOODBYE YAHOO and hello Gmail…
After, whoa, really? 17 years? Wow. Ok… bye yahoo. Good while it lasted.

I really really wish someone had an answer to this… right after I get my law school decisions I'm going to say bye yahoo and hello gmail too. I can't take the requests anymore.
I even emailed yahoo about this very question and they never responded.

I too would love a solution for this. When I search on this problem, I just see a lot of posts like this asking the question with no solution. It's almost like Yahoo is encouraging spammy activity. Hope they address at some point soon.

They won't because they are stupid. There are several work-arounds they could implement like getting an email once a week for people trying to contact you.
I've been using yahoo mail exclusively since 1999 but I am slowly warming up to gmail. I get a few spam messenger invites each week because I'm signed into messenger through yahoo mail. So that's hundreds of spam messenger invites and not a single real one.
BTW, I don't use yahoo messenger as a stand alone anymore. Messenger services are so 1990s.

yes, I would like to stop this too, as I get multiple random requests every day and it brings up that flashing tab. This is highly annoying and there should be a way to stop it entirely.

I get these annoying invites every day as well. Come on Yahoo, you all are better than this!

If you're using the new Yahoo email, click on that N shaped lightning bolt next to where it says Messenger on the left hand side of the screen below your email folders. I selected Sign Out From All Locations: Problem Solved!

Stop using the internet. It's really that simple. In fact, the world was much more enjoyable without having to worry about spammers, malware, viruses, backups etc. etc.
All in all, not worth it.
