I’ve been a huge fan of Google Maps (a.k.a. Google Local) ever since it first came out. I preferred their mapping functionality and features over Yahoo! Maps, Mapquest, Microsoft’s Live Local and others.
What to my surprise today, but did I notice that they finally implemented a feature I’d be wanting since the beginning.
WHY CAN’T I SAVE ALL MY FAVORITE PLACES?
Well, now I can with Google’s My Maps feature!
The other thing I noticed was that their satellite imagery has been cleared up in great detail. That was one area that I thought Microsoft’s service really beat them to the spot.
Now, I can save any location with my own notes or graphics and routes if I’d like. I can rename them and make them publicly searchable, or keep them private for just my own use. The other thing I like is that the site won’t let you zoom in closer than their imaging will allow. At least it hasn’t for me yet. Most of the other map services lose their satellite view if you try to zoom too close. Although this may have been available for awhile, I also notice they’ve got a quick link to download the location file for Google Earth. Lastly, although not directly related to Google My Maps, the ability their maps provide of letting you add multiple locations is also a great feature for really fine-tuning your trip or preferred route you’re going to take to get somewhere.
Figure out where you are with Google My Maps
