I’ve been having a little bit of fun recently finding some Easter Eggs on a variety of websites. Easter Eggs are hidden little gifts, games or visual treats that are buried in code. You have to do something special to activate the Easter Egg so you can see it.
One of the methods I’ve played with recently is using what’s called a Konami code. If you’re a video game enthusiast you probably thought immediately of the game manufacturer. Their code
UP, UP, DOWN, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT, RIGHT, B, A, ENTER
when entered would open up cheats or special levels if entered at a specific point during the game. That same code is now being used on websites to deliver Easter Eggs.
I just read about a new one from my friend Brian Layman on his Facebook update:
RT @kymhuynh: Lens flare easter egg on Facebook. Open a buddy chat then press UP, UP, DOWN, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT, RIGHT, B, A, ENTER.
If you’d like to read more about Konami Codes in sites and how to put one in yours, Andrew Tetlaw had this great Konami Code article on Sitepoint.
