Their song “Black Water” just finished playing through the Yahoo! Music Engine and my LaunchCAST music station. I highly recommend that service, it’s introduced me to some great artists that I would have never heard of just listening to the radio or mainstream music places.
Anyway, that song brings back memories of being at my grandmother’s house, Meemaw, and having my cousins Milton and Yvonne. Specifically it would be the lyrics:
I?d like to hear some funky dixieland
Pretty mama come and take me by the hand
By the hand, take me by the hand pretty mama
Come and dance with your daddy all night long
Running through Meemaw’s house singing those lyrics, talking into an old fan to make your voice sound funny, them making fun of me when I said “Yemon-Yime Koo-aid” and “spasketti”, and sitting in Meemaw’s kitchen eating cereal before bed and getting in trouble for being to loud as we made each other laugh. Those were good times, good memories.
I wonder where the name “Doobie Brothers” came from? Is it really that obvious in it’s meaning? Being the curious type I decided to look up the bands biography on Yahoo! Music. Turns out, it is that obvious:
Eventually, the quartet decided to form a group, naming themselves the Doobie Brothers after a slang term for marijuana.
