Looks like I’ve set off even more spam magnets or radars or something. Just deleted 105 comment spam entries. I’m sure that’s probably not many compared to what other blogs have to deal with, but it’s definitely enough to be really annoying.
I haven't had comment spam to that degree, but here are things I have done. In your WP admin page, under Options|Discussion, I have it set to hold a comment for moderation if it contains more than 1 link. This has stopped many spam comments from being posted. I have tried the Bad Behavior plug in but that prevented certain people using certain ISP's from commenting so I turned that off. I recently installed hashcash plugin (https://elliottback.com/) and have not received any comment spam at all for a few days, so it appears to work. Also, under options|discussion, I have set it so the comment author must have a previously approved comment and that works well, that stops spammers that don't have links in their comment. You can force commenters to have to register but I want to make it as easy as possible for someone to comment.
That's just some stuff that I have tried, I would love to find a plugin that does the word verification, like Blogger has now, but have yet to find anything like that.
