One of the pieces of software I hadn’t yet reinstalled on my laptop since my reformat was Audacity from Sourceforge. This is a great, powerful and free piece of software that allows you to do audio editing on your own.
I don’t know about you but most of the time when I’m looking for something pretty specific on the Internet I usually just try typing the domain name, so in this case I just tried typing www.audacity.com thinking that would take me where I needed to go. It didn’t.
The www.audacity.com website belongs to a company named "Audacity, Inc." and according to the first line of their website:
We DO NOT Make Audio Software
Audacity, Inc. does not make, sell or support the audacity audio recording software.
To me that sounds like a pretty big Internet Identity Crisis.
There’s a domain for www.audacityinc.com that’s registered and it says there’s a website coming soon, I’m not sure if that’s owned by Audacity, Inc. or not. If it is and they’re working on a new website kudos to them. If it’s not then I’d look to purchase that one and sell www.audacity.com to the Sourceforge and Audacity.
I’m sure Audacity, Inc. is getting loads of traffic from people looking for the Audacity software, otherwise they wouldn’t immediately be letting people know they’ve come to the wrong place.
I think the better statement would be for them to boldly state who they are and what they do to visitors. I think people will figure it out quick enough, perhaps a little graphic somewhere on the page that let’s people know about the Audacity software and a link to their website.
