Greetings! Remember me? I’m the blogger here and I’ve been seriously absent of late. I couldn’t let today pass without publishing a post though because today marks the anniversary of my first post as a blogger six years ago today.
I was having an interesting conversation with my boss a number of days ago. We were discussing the current state of our business and where we saw things heading in 2010. We discussed some of the needs of the business and what we each enjoyed.
My boss said something to me that at first thought really made me bristle with frustration, but the more I thought about it the more I realized it was probably a fairly accurate statement. He said that I didn’t appear as someone who wanted to be an expert at something. He challenged that he didn’t see me having the motivation to dig into a topic or issue and figure out everything there was to know about it.
I bristled initially because I think I do enjoy pursuing answers to problems and will work very hard to be fix the problem for someone if they ask for my help. The more we talked and the more I thought about what was said, I came to the conclusion he’s right.
I’m no expert.
What I am is someone that likes to know a lot about a variety of topics so that I can be as helpful to people as I possibly can on a wide variety of issues and questions. Even though I may not want to be an expert, I do want to have more than just an average level of knowledge about these topics. I enjoy being perceived as someone who is helpful and will probably know the answer to many questions.
I related my motivation to the lack of interest I have (at least presently) to pursue an advanced degree in the form of a Masters or Doctorate certification. I’d be more interested in going back to college for another bachelor’s degree in something new.
I’ve got plenty of friends that I would consider experts in their field. I encourage them to continue being that resource to people. I’ll hang back here and continue to be as helpful as possible to people whenever possible and connect them to the experts whenever it’s needed.
