I guess it’s just going to be a photo-centric day today. After my recent posts about Riya Photo Search software, I came across this article in PC Mag called Location, Location, Location.
The logic behind this is that just like you’d desire to tag your photos automatically by who’s in the photo, geo-tagging let’s you tag photos based on the actually geographic location of where the photo was shot.
I’m not aware of any cameras that have GPS built into them, if so, that would make this even simpler. The current solution is if you have a device that does GPS and it can include a tracking log of your coordinates at various time intervals.
You then need a piece of software that will read the time stamp information from your photos taken with the time stamp of the GPS unit and merge the two with information. The article mentions the Location Stamper utility from Microsoft, which is free and part of their WWMX (World-Wide Media Exchange) research project.
This would be a perfect little setup for the three tasks that my brother and I hope to accomplish before we die:
- Canoe the entire length of the Mississippi River
- Hike the Appalachian Trail
- Bicycle from Coast-to-Coast
