Our family has been on a bit of a mission in recent months to try and drastically reduce if not completely eliminate the intake of high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) from our kids diets. This has gone along in coordination with eating more organic fruits, vegetables and dairy as well.
I’m not sure where my wife heard the original information about high-fructose corn syrup and the problems that come with it. I didn’t really object too much to the effort because I figure any increased attention to be aware of what we’re eating and to eat healthier is a good thing.
What I wasn’t sure about was the implied evil and danger of the overuse of high-fructose corn syrup in our everyday food. Trust me, it’s in stuff you’d never expect and sometimes not in stuff you’d totally expect it to be an ingredient.
Remembering back to my chemistry days, I was thinking that there are a variety of different sugars that all end in “-ose”: glucose, sucrose, dextrose, fructose, etc. I didn’t think any of them were necessarily bad for you, at least not when you don’t overdo it right?
I’m all for using more natural sugars when possible, but if you’re wondering just what the big deal is, visit the SweetSurprise.com website to get loads of learning about just what’s up with the high-fructose corn syrup debate.
