Aside from people I rarely email from my Gmail account getting a strange email from me and fielding a variety of people asking what was going on and what happened, I believe my Gmail account being hacked has been resolved.
Google Was a Little Late
About 7 hours after the hacking occurred I received this alert from Google in my Gmail account interface.
The message says:
“Warning: We believe your account was recently accessed from: China (123.161.74.57). Show details and preferences | Ignore”
When you click on the “Show details” link (why would anyone click on the “Ignore”?) I was presented with a table of the following information.
I’ve highlighted the offending sessions. I’m not sure if I’m asking or expecting too much of Google, but would it be too hard to immediately suspend any activity coming from a foreign country if it would have required Scotty to “beam me up” to have gotten there in the time allotted?
There was one good thing that came from this account hacking. After I received 100+ email rejection notices I took the time to clean-up my address book. What I thought even more interesting in that process though was the number of email addresses that were kind of “ghosted” in my address book. No name or detail information, just an email address. They didn’t even show up in my list of address book entries unless I specifically searched for them by the email address.
Google/Gmail needs to drastically improve their contact management functions for their address book. I believe this is significantly more crucial now that Android users are tied to all of their Google information so tightly.
