A friend help me notice today the irony of automobiles participating in a funeral procession getting special traffic recognition. Why is it they need to have police officers fly in front of them to block intersections? Are they dead in a hurry to get where they’re going? Oh, you say it’s not for them? It’s for everyone else in attendance? Well, where’s the respect there? “Sorry about the death in your family, now can we hurry up and get to the cemetery and dump some dirt on this guy so I can get back to my life?”

It's so that the funeral procession will stay together.
If they didn't block intersections, half of the procession could get stuck at a red light, seperating them from the cars ahead of them and allowing drivers who are not part of the procession to get in-between them.

Honestly, I think it's a good reminder that life (and death) is not all about me. We live such disconnected relationally sterile lives…it's good to be reminded that there's more to life than our daily agenda.
