A fisherman pulled a 6′ octopus out of the Ohio River on Monday. For all the boring details, it was dead and he caught it with a net.
This story initially surprised me until you find out it’s a Pacific Coast octopus and was probably bought from a fish market or something to scare somebody. After the initial shock wore off, a quote further down in the article became more entertaining than the oddity itself.
According to Jeremy Beavin, a state aquarium specialist for the Falls of Ohio State Park, where the octopus was caught said:
“My guess is it was probably put there deliberately. Someone could have gotten it at a Wal Mart.”
Obviously Mr. Beavin isn’t a retail specialist, because the last time I checked you couldn’t purchase a 6′ Pacific Coast octopus at your local Wally-World.
