I read the story today of how the FBI has been hit with a weird virus that has caused them to need to shut down parts of their network. A friend of mine is in town this week and he works for the FBI so I mentioned it to him. He said they’re always getting people trying to hack into their systems or shut them down or any other number of actions against them.
It’s pretty obvious why that would be true. The FBI would be a huge target for people to try and crack right? The question is, how much of it is a malicious attack and how much of it is just someone trying to get bragging rights to say they were able to do it? My next question would be what should the penalties be for someone that’s caught trying to penetrate the security systems of the FBI? I’d say this is a pretty serious offense given the amount of classified information that the FBI has on and inside its network. The other side of challenge is that for all the time and resources that are spent trying to secure our systems from our own citizens, is that much less time and resources that the FBI has to focus on other, specific tasks and objectives.
If you heard someone bragging about hacking into the FBI’s systems. Would you report them?
