My boss sent me the link to an article today about The Most Overrated Careers on USNews. Of the careers listed:
- Advertising executive
- Architect
- Attorney
- Chef
- Chiropractor
- Clinical psychologist
- Medical scientist
- Nonprofit manager
- Physician
- Police officer
- Real estate agent
- Small-business owner
- Teacher
The one we’re interested in is the Small-Business Owner (SBO). It’s just me and my boss in our company for the most part. We’ll hire in some additional help for projects as needed, but normally it’s the two of us 8-to-5 through the week.
The joke is that my title from the beginning has been something along the lines of “sherpa”. I even printed “Data Sherpa” on my business cards initially. It turns out I’m in the best position I can be in as a profession.
At the end of each discussion of the overrated jobs the article lists the “Alternative”. The alternative for being the Small-Business Owner states:
Be the No. 2 person in someone else’s small business. You’ll have a
seat at the table and a say in company decisions. But you’ll go home
with fewer headaches than the owner does. And probably go home earlier.
Yep, that seals it for me. I’m #2. Now, if only that moniker didn’t have some other bodily function reference to sour the imagery associated with the title.
