How to Customize the Default Places List in Windows 7
Today I was presented with a question I wasn't sure how to answer for the Windows 7 operating system. "How do you change the default list of locations available in the Windows Save As dialog box?"
I've made this change before in Windows XP using a tool called TweakUI, but was fairly certain it didn't work in Windows 7 (it doesn't).
Here's what we're trying to accomplish:
Many of the Google searches you'll find will point you to how to change what the actual location is for one of the "Places" listed in that left sidebar. What I'm trying to do is change the actual list of "Places" that are even available.

It involves editing your registry, which can be a bit daunting. It's kind of like brain surgery on your Windows PC. You don't want to mess anything up!
After you make the edits, you get the results I've chosen below:
So, if you're always changing where you want to save things away from the default locations Windows offers you, you can set these to anything you want. In my example above, the "Z:\" drive is an external 320GB USB drive.
