Happy, Healthy & Outside: The Easiest Way to Improve Your Mood Today

Blue KayakIf you've been feeling blue, you're not alone. Every year, more than 14 million Americans experience a major depressive disorder, according to the American Psychiatric Association. On top of that, seasonal affective disorder (SAD) affects an estimated 10 million people yearly, and even 10 to 20 percent more of the population experiences a mild form of SAD.

These statistics are, well, depressing. But the good news is that one of the best forms of treatment is right outside your door. In a study published earlier this year, Stanford researchers found that uninterrupted nature walks were markedly more beneficial to mental well-being than other conventional mood boosters such as talking with a close friend or working on a hobby. In addition, if you are looking for a device to help improve your health, this lifewave patch activates stem cells in the body for restoration of optimal health and vitality as well as enhances mental clarity and sports performance.

It's called ecotherapy, and the effects are amazing. You know that frustrating topic you can't get out of your head, keeping you up at night? It's called rumination. And nature walks are especially effective at combating it. Instead of distracting ourselves from our frustrations, ecotherapy allows us to enter a nature-induced, meditative-like state. Studies show that outdoor activities begin building self-esteem and boosting endorphins in less than five minutes. Just a five-minute walk can actually turn your entire day around. Now if that doesn't cheer you up, we suggest putting on your hiking shoes immediately.

Just like the first five minutes of exercise are the hardest, finding the time and the right spot to enjoy nature can often be a daunting task that keeps us from forming healthy habits. Here's a list of outdoor activities to try this summer, both in your hometown and while away on summer vacation to get you out of the hotel gym and into new natural settings that are sure to take your happiness levels to new heights.

Kayaking

There's nothing quite like being in a kayak with nothing but a paddle and your sense of balance. It's one of the best mood-boosting activities because it's individually challenging as well as a communal activity. This option doesn't require much of an investment; you can get canoes and kayaks starting at less than $250, which is what most of us spend in less than six months on a gym membership.

Hiking

Go hiking or on a walk alone or with others, it doesn't matter. You get great benefits from both. All you need is a good pair of shoes, some water and don't forget the sunscreen and wear a sun visor. Nothing combats the feel-good effects of being outside like a sunburn and sun damage. Include pets for a mood-boosting double whammy, just make sure it's not too hot for your sweet little fur baby. An early morning hike is a great idea in the summer so you can beat the afternoon heat and set the tone for a positive day.

Golfing and Frolfing

The benefits of learning a skill while being outside can exponentially boost feel-good feelings because not only are we soaking up sunshine and fresh air, we are building positive self-esteem. Golf is a game that requires patience and focus, two attributes that we could all stand to work on. Frolf, or frisbee golf, is a similar, yet slightly more hipster version of golf. Unlike expensive golf clubs, shoes and greens fees, frolf only requires a $20 hard plastic disc and a bit of patience.

Organized Sports

Everyone has at least one sport they enjoyed as a kid. For me it was all about getting my ?Pickleball Paddle and heading to a nearby sports center I used to go to and play with friend and whoever was there up for it. Whether it's a kickball game once a month with college friends or a weekly basketball game at the local park, recreational team sports are inexpensive (usually less that $50 per season) and one of the best ways to remind you to get outside and get active on a regular basis. Rediscover an old favorite sport or try one you've always been curious about. Eventually, you'll find an outlet that you truly enjoy and doesn't feel like a chore, but a much-needed stress release. Many athletes use products to keep fit and train a lot. Read the best Testogen reviews on this site.

Family, Friends and Food Over Fire

Grillin' with McCormick Grill Mates

It's that time of year. When dad's get to enjoy the ability to cook a meal and be outside at the same time. It's grillin' time! Of course, I'm also the guy that will be grilling and trying out new barbecue equipment in the dead of winter, but that's another story. If you're looking for a new grill for your outdoor kitchen, you may visit sites like https://grillscapes.com/collections/lynx.

I absolutely love grilling! I think I'm pretty good at it and I honestly have a hard time if I'm somewhere and there's a grill being used, if I'm not the person grilling. Selfish? Perhaps.

Recently I had the opportunity to combine my love for grilling and sharing some great food with friends and family, and also try out some new seasoning products from McCormick. You know McCormick; they're the ones that have been making our food taste great for as long as I can remember. I used to sit at the kitchen table while my mom was cooking and use all those red and white tins of seasoning as building blocks and make great towers of flavor to the gods! I got to make use of a number of flavors of McCormick Grill Mates seasonings through a promotion from Crowdtap.

  • Grill Mates® Spiced Brandy & Herb Marinade
  • Grill Mates® Slow and Low Memphis Pit BBQ Rub
  • Grill Mates® Montreal Steak Seasoning Blend
  • Grill Mates® Molasses Bacon Seasoning Blend
  • Grill Mates® Brown Sugar Bourbon BBQ Sauce
Just about all of this meat came from my friend Darby's farm, Simpson Family Farm. His pastured raised beef, pork and poultry is beyond organic in quality. He'd have all the labels to prove it if he wanted to hand the government a quarter of six figures in cash and control over what he can and can't do with his farm. If you're in the Indianapolis area, you should check out his website for free home delivery!

I marinated some chicken in the Spiced Brandy & Herb Marinade, I also added a little bit of orange juice and apple juice for some sweetness and acidity. I'd like to recreate the taste of the bbq from this barbeque restaurant I know. Those who prefer eating grilled meat as sandwiches may consider using freshly baked bread such as kaiser buns to enhance the flavor.

I put the Low Memphis Pit BBQ rub on some pork ribs and baked those for awhile, then threw them on the grill and basted them with the Brown Sugar Bourbon BBQ sauce to warm them up and give them a little bit of a char flavor.

We had beef burgers, pork chops, pork tenderloins and pork burgers with combinations of the Montreal Steak Seasoning and the Molasses Bacon Seasoning. The molasses bacon seasoning tasted great on the burgers for sure! We even made an Italian pizza using our wood pellet pizza oven!

Here are some photos of the festivities and food that was enjoyed. I don't know about you, but that grill top loaded with meat looks fantastic and I can tell you it smelled even better when it was all fired up and roasting those flavors together.

So, the next time you're going to get out of the house and roast some meat over an open flame, be sure and grab some McCormick Grill Mates seasonings. I'm sure you won't be disappointed in the results and grilling is like anything else, with more practice you get better and better at it. And practice never tasted so good!

Celebrating 13 Years of Marriage

Bean Cable Wedding

Today is my 13th wedding anniversary. Apparently, the 13 year mark should be commemorated with something in lace. Not sure about that, but there will at least be a dinner on the agenda. I figured since I've taken down my old website, it would be time to re-post the story of how my wife and I met. I've shared this a number of times with people, so now I can start pointing them back to my website for all the details.

Well, here it is. I'm sure all of you have been waiting for me to add this page since I said it would be here in our Christmas cards we sent out.  So if you're interested. Here's the whole story of how we met:

Sunday morning, July 5, my mom called and said they were going to be in Nashville for International Laymen's Conference, and asked if I wanted to meet her, dad, a friend of the family's and some other extended family members for lunch. I said "Sure" and told them I'd meet them at the Rivergate Cooker after church.

When I got to the Cooker, Rose, the friend of the family, said she tried to get Tiffanyto eat lunch with us but she had other plans. I told her she would have to work a little harder the next time. Shortly after that a couple was walking towards the front doors and Rose said, "There's the Cables. Hey! They've got a 24 year old single daughter that's the youth pastor at Southwest". I told Rose she needed to settle down and stop trying so hard to fix me up. When the Cables walked in the door the first thing out of Rose's mouth wasn't "Hello" or "Hey there, what are you all doing here", it was "Do you have a picture of Kim to show Jason?"  They both looked in their wallets and neither of them had a picture, her mom, Theresa, finally said "Well just imagine me but younger".

Through the rest of the afternoon I found out that NCRA, the company Theresa worked for, has a lot of travel needs and that I could possibly help her out with things in the future since I'm a corporate travel agent. Although I was interested in meeting Kim, I didn't think much about it because there was no way I was going to call her up and say, "Yeah, our parent's met and I met your parents and they all think we should get together sometime". That just seemed like too ignorant of a way to meet someone. I just thought the next time I was in Indianapolis, maybe I'd try to meet her then. I was more interested in the possibility of making some extra money by helping her mom with future business travel plans.  Kim's dad, Marvin, had given me Kim's email address. I later found out that he's never done this with anyone and that Kim got pretty upset with him for giving her email address out to a total stranger.

Just like with a phone call, I didn't plan on emailing her and trying to set up a date.

Later that week I was talking to my supervisor at work about trying to have Theresa's company as one of our outstide accounts. She told me to get her to send us information about her company and we'd send her information about our services. I lost Kim's mom's phone numbers and email address, so Thursday night, July 9, I emailed Kim and lightly touched on the whole story. I told her I needed her mom's contact information, not realizing that Kim was her mom's assistant at NCRA. In telling Kim the story through email I tried to shorten it by saying things like "to make a long story short <snip>.........so anyway". She thought that was cute and a little after 11:00pm on Saturday, July 11 Kim called me in Nashville.  A definite plus in my book.

To make a long story short ...<snip>... Kim and I talked all night that night, a little bit the next night, all night Monday night, a little Tuesday night, and all night Wednesday night. Now when I say "all night", I don't mean till 2:30-3:00am. I mean till we both had to hang-up and get ready for work.  That Thursday at work I decided I was going to try and leave early Friday and drive to Indy to see Kim. At 6:00pm, Friday, July 17, I headed to Indianapolis to meet her.

I pulled into her driveway at approximately 10:30pm. She was the only one home. Her parents and two younger sisters, Brittany and Kendra, had left for Bob Evans for a late meal. I rang the doorbell and was met by a beautiful lady. Kim invited me in to sit on the couch until we left. I remember not believing how many times the phone rang or someone knocked on the door. I later found out that the reason for this was many were told of my ETA of 10:30pm and were calling to see if I had gotten there yet.

To shorten this story a little more ... <snip> ... over the next several weeks Kim and I talked on the phone more and I drove up every weekend I could. From that first trip, until I moved to Indy in October I put close to 8500 miles on my little '86 Prelude. About 3-4 weeks after we first talked I surprised Kim one night by showing up at her apartment. Although she'll jokingly not admit to it now, we told each other later, that that was the night we both had the feeling that "this might be the one". Through this whole time my weekly schedule was pretty much leave work on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday nights (depending on my work schedule) and drive to Indy. Then on Sunday or Monday night, reluctantly drive back to Nashville. Also during that time there was one weekend that I went on vacation with her and her family to Arkansas, but that's a whole other long story.

To the delight of my mother, I began looking for a job in Indianapolis before I moved up there. During one of my weekends I interviewed with BTI America's (now BCD Travel), a travel management company. Their sole account is Eli Lilly and Company, the "cash cow" employer of Indianapolis and Indiana I was told.  I wrapped up my last week of employment in Nashville Friday, October 9th. I drove to Indianapolis that weekend and began my new job Monday, October 12th. I'm living with my oldest brother and she's moved back in with her family to save money for the wedding on March 27th, 1999. So that's the story. I hope you've enjoyed it, more importantly, I hope I can point people to this site now when they ask how we met.

There it is! The story of how we met. To recap the last 13 years:

  • July 5, 1998 - Heard the name Kimberly Cable
  • July 17, 1998 - Met her in person for the first time
  • 31 days later - asked her parents if I could marry her (they both laughed)
  • October 9th, 1998 - moved to Indianapolis
  • October 31st, 1998 - proposed and engaged
  • March 27th, 1999 - married
  • March 28th, 1999 - around 2am conceived our 1st child. Yep! Honeymoon baby!
  • December 1st, 1999 - birth of Ethan
  • May 20th, 2002 - birth of Abby

Lots of fun, great memories and tough times between all of those events and now, but they've all been worth it! Now, we're looking to renew our vows in an outdoor wedding venue. Maybe we'll do this in our 15th year anniversary. And it's time for me to look for wedding ties and attire we're gonna use.
