5 Smart Tips for Safe Online Shopping in 2021

Laptop Credit Card - Online Shopping

Online shopping is fast becoming the new norm. Thanks to the freedom, convenience, and ease it offers, you're probably thinking of doing it yourself. However, one of the biggest concerns most online shoppers have is security. How secure are your financial details on shopping websites?

Here are a few tips that can help you stay safe in 2021.

1.     Start with trusted sites

There are millions of online retail sites today. Most of them are legitimate, but some contain links to spam and malicious content. You, therefore, need to be extra careful when searching for a shopping website.

First, start with the popular and well-known sites like Amazon.com or Ebay.com. You're less likely to be scammed on these sites since you've probably used them before. You can also try your favorite retail stores if they're online, but ensure you know the right web addresses.

Be on the lookout for the popular domain misspelling scams, for instance, a hacker may use Amazon.net instead of Amazon.com. These tricks have been successful for years because they're not conspicuous at first glance.

2.     Look for HTTPS URL and a padlock icon

Before sharing your credit or debit card information on an online shopping site, here are the two rules you should follow: Ensure the site’s URL starts with HTTPS, and confirm that a locked padlock icon appears slightly left of the URL bar.

The (S) in HTTPS stands for secure and shows that the shopping website has integrated a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption. The locked padlock (sometimes green) indicates that your connection to the website is secure.

Avoid sharing any information on sites with just HTTP and without the padlock.

3.     Don’t shop over public wi-fi

We’ve heard stories about public wi-fi hotspots and cybercriminals countless times. By now, you should know that while shopping using public Wi-Fi seems convenient, it leaves your data in the hands of hackers.

Personal information such as your credit card details, bank details, phone number, and your emails are but a few of the data a hacker can manipulate from the vulnerabilities of unsecure Wi-Fi.

So, instead of exposing yourself to that much risk, always use your data to complete your online shopping transactions. And if you really have to use Wi-Fi, a simple VPN download will go a long way to improving your security.

But still, if you can avoid insecure public Wi-Fi, do yourself a favor and do it.

4.     Keep your software up-to-date

Updating your software is the #1 online security measure every security expert recommends. Whether you're shopping on your phone, laptop, or tablet, ensure that the operating system is up-to-date with the latest updates.

Updating your software fixes any vulnerabilities that cybercriminals may exploit to send malware into your system.

5.     Avoid ‘too good to be true’ offers

In any e-commerce store, if any product pricing appears to be too good to be true, it probably is. Don't trust any seller offering such an offer. This is usually a trap by some sellers to collect your credit card information among other data, so they can sell it.  In other cases, the product might be of very poor quality.

Conclusion

When shopping online, getting scammed isn’t just a far-fetched idea. It happens to millions of people every day. You should therefore be careful with how you go about the process if you want to avoid it. With the tips above, we’re confident that you’ll always be one step ahead of the criminals.

How Manufacturers Keep Medical Devices Sterile and Safe

Medical Equipment Room

Cyber-security has added a new dimension to medical device safety, and the FDA is urging device manufacturers to begin incorporating digital security into safety procedures, the administration’s blog reports. With devices such as implantable cardiac pacemakers and insulin pumps now incorporating digital technology connected to the Internet of Things, a computer security breach can now threaten the lives of patients as well as their medical records. To address this, the FDA has released guidelines for medical manufacturers on how to incorporate digital security into safety procedures throughout product life-cycles, starting during the design phase. These guidelines aim to help manufacturers prevent risks as well as manage any risks that do emerge.

While the digital dimension of medical device safety is new, device manufacturers have long been required to take steps to ensure product safety. Here’s a look at how medical manufacturers keep the devices they produce sterile and safe for consumers.

Material Selection

Strategic material selection lays a foundation for safe medical devices. In order to remain sterile, medical device parts are often made of special materials that are resistant to heat expansion, chemical change, and gas permeation. They must also come in very precise sizes to retain a good seal as they are used. Medical o-rings actually come in over 7,000 sizes. Some of the highly specialized materials used include liquid silicone rubber (LSR), which can withstand a range of temperature from -85 degrees F to 400 degrees F. LSR can also retain its properties during sterilization processes involving gamma radiation, ethylene oxide and steam, enabling it to meet United States Pharmacopeia and National Formulary safety standards, which represent compliance with federal law. LSR is further resistant to cleaning agents and microbial growth. The properties of liquid silicone rubber make it ideal for medical applications such as syringes, as well as face masks or inhalers.

Manufacturing Process

The materials used for medical devices must go through special processes in order to remain sterile. Best-in-class medical device manufacturers use medical device cleanrooms that meet different classes of regulatory standards. Cleanrooms control contamination by careful monitoring to ensure that contaminants are not concentrated at more than a specified number of particles per cubic meter of a given particle size. Highly refined filters and recirculation of purified air help ensure air quality. Staff must enter the room through secure air locks while wearing protective clothing. Substances that could potentially contaminate products are banned from the cleanroom, and furniture and other items are kept to a minimum. Special walls that can be wiped down with antiseptic may also be used to maintain strict conditions and humidity may be controlled.

Shipping and Handling

Rigorous shipping and handling policies also help ensure medical device safety. Packages intended for use in shipping medical devices must be tested for compliance with International Organization for Standardization safety guidelines. Medical device manufacturers must demonstrate that package barriers ensure sterility over the duration of the product’s intended life-cycle. Packaging must also hold up under testing to ensure integrity during the handling, distribution, and storage processes. Environmental controls, artificial aging and simulation of distribution are used to test package integrity. Inspectors check for factors such as leaks, seal strength, plastic tears and puncture resistance. Packaging labels must also provide directions for use and warnings against unsafe practices.

Once medical devices arrive at medical facilities, medical staff take additional steps to ensure safe handling and storage. Hospital loading docks and warehouses follow special materials management procedures to ensure that devices remain sterile during storage and preparation for use. Items such as sterile instruments and medical pumps are often stored in a separate sterile processing department for extra protection.

Essential Supplies Every Motorist Needs to Have In Case of a Roadside Emergency

Roadside Automobile Accident

Whether you have AAA or belong to an economically priced motor club that promises to help you at any time you are in need, it is just safer to be prepared for emergencies on your end. Like many other motorists, you probably would prefer it if someone else were to come out and fix your flat tire but the time that it can sometimes take for emergency roadside assistance to get to you can be quite excessive.

It could be because your car has become disabled in some distant and remote area, or in the event that all roadside assistance technicians are currently dispatched. Keeping a jump starter in the trunk of your vehicle, along with an entire emergency roadside kit will keep you safe, warm, out of danger, and potentially make it so that you can resolve any technical issues you are having with your vehicle on your own.

Basic Roadside Assistance Provisions

There is probably already a spare tire and a vehicle jacking device of some sort in the trunk area of your vehicle. Although those things can be helpful if you have a tire blowout, there are many kinds of roadside emergencies that you can find yourself in. At a minimum, you should be able to find a few bottles of water, a flashlight, blankets, a small toolkit, and jumper cables or jump starter box in the rear of your car for emergencies. If you’d like, put some snacks, a spare cell phone charger and a portable radio in your vehicle as well so that you are prepared for longer durations.

Tools Drivers Need During Roadside Emergencies

Not all motorists are capable of changing their spark plugs or even doing much more than opening the hoods of their cars, but there are also many times when having the right tools can provide the solution that you need. In the event that your car battery dies, you can either wait to have it towed, hope that emergency roadside assistance personnel can jump your car, or you can charge your battery yourself. A jump starter will be needed for you to recharge the dead cells in your car’s battery, but this type of tool is exceedingly easy to operate, even for an inexperienced motorist.

Knowing When to Use Your Roadside Emergency Supplies and When to Stay Put

If your car has broken down in an area where you don’t feel that you can safely exit your car, make sure that you call for help first. This could be the case if your car is disabled on a busy freeway, either in the shoulder or in a traffic lane. If you fear that a collision could occur, use traffic cones, reflectors and flares to signal to oncoming drivers that your car is disabled. Otherwise, use your judgement and street smarts to decide whether you can make an attempt to diagnose and repair your car or just wait for support services to arrive.

Drivers that have the right tools and are prepared to deal with roadside emergencies are less likely to panic and can make snap judgements that keep them safer. All you need to do is take a look inside of the trunk of your car and see if you would be able to stay comfortably inside your car for a while based on what you see. Although people always hope to avoid having roadside emergencies, there are ways to make them more bearable.
