Happy, Healthy & Outside: The Easiest Way to Improve Your Mood Today

Blue KayakIf you've been feeling blue, you're not alone. Every year, more than 14 million Americans experience a major depressive disorder, according to the American Psychiatric Association. On top of that, seasonal affective disorder (SAD) affects an estimated 10 million people yearly, and even 10 to 20 percent more of the population experiences a mild form of SAD.

These statistics are, well, depressing. But the good news is that one of the best forms of treatment is right outside your door. In a study published earlier this year, Stanford researchers found that uninterrupted nature walks were markedly more beneficial to mental well-being than other conventional mood boosters such as talking with a close friend or working on a hobby. In addition, if you are looking for a device to help improve your health, this lifewave patch activates stem cells in the body for restoration of optimal health and vitality as well as enhances mental clarity and sports performance.

It's called ecotherapy, and the effects are amazing. You know that frustrating topic you can't get out of your head, keeping you up at night? It's called rumination. And nature walks are especially effective at combating it. Instead of distracting ourselves from our frustrations, ecotherapy allows us to enter a nature-induced, meditative-like state. Studies show that outdoor activities begin building self-esteem and boosting endorphins in less than five minutes. Just a five-minute walk can actually turn your entire day around. Now if that doesn't cheer you up, we suggest putting on your hiking shoes immediately.

Just like the first five minutes of exercise are the hardest, finding the time and the right spot to enjoy nature can often be a daunting task that keeps us from forming healthy habits. Here's a list of outdoor activities to try this summer, both in your hometown and while away on summer vacation to get you out of the hotel gym and into new natural settings that are sure to take your happiness levels to new heights.

Kayaking

There's nothing quite like being in a kayak with nothing but a paddle and your sense of balance. It's one of the best mood-boosting activities because it's individually challenging as well as a communal activity. This option doesn't require much of an investment; you can get canoes and kayaks starting at less than $250, which is what most of us spend in less than six months on a gym membership.

Hiking

Go hiking or on a walk alone or with others, it doesn't matter. You get great benefits from both. All you need is a good pair of shoes, some water and don't forget the sunscreen and wear a sun visor. Nothing combats the feel-good effects of being outside like a sunburn and sun damage. Include pets for a mood-boosting double whammy, just make sure it's not too hot for your sweet little fur baby. An early morning hike is a great idea in the summer so you can beat the afternoon heat and set the tone for a positive day.

Golfing and Frolfing

The benefits of learning a skill while being outside can exponentially boost feel-good feelings because not only are we soaking up sunshine and fresh air, we are building positive self-esteem. Golf is a game that requires patience and focus, two attributes that we could all stand to work on. Frolf, or frisbee golf, is a similar, yet slightly more hipster version of golf. Unlike expensive golf clubs, shoes and greens fees, frolf only requires a $20 hard plastic disc and a bit of patience.

Organized Sports

Everyone has at least one sport they enjoyed as a kid. For me it was all about getting my ?Pickleball Paddle and heading to a nearby sports center I used to go to and play with friend and whoever was there up for it. Whether it's a kickball game once a month with college friends or a weekly basketball game at the local park, recreational team sports are inexpensive (usually less that $50 per season) and one of the best ways to remind you to get outside and get active on a regular basis. Rediscover an old favorite sport or try one you've always been curious about. Eventually, you'll find an outlet that you truly enjoy and doesn't feel like a chore, but a much-needed stress release. Many athletes use products to keep fit and train a lot. Read the best Testogen reviews on this site.

More on Growing Older As a Guy

"I participated in a campaign on behalf of Dad Central Consulting for Depend. I received products samples and a promotional item as a thank you for participating."

Taking it Easy

As I wrote about in my last post, the years keep rolling by for us. There's no pause or rewind button. Due to some health issues my own dad has been facing lately, it has caused me to think even more about my own frailty as a man, husband and father. As a colleague once shared with me on something he'd heard online, these bodies we think are invincible aren't much more than a fragile bag of blood and fluid that we do our best to take care of hopefully.

My dad, like most of yours, was also viewed in my eyes as this immovable force. His arms and hands were always rough and strong and stable. As he continues to age he's had some spinal issues that have caused him to be almost completely immobilized. Through recent surgery, he's hoping to recover that mobility and strength, but he's having to relearn movements and leg control that once came naturally and without thought.

It's tough seeing your dad age like that, but it's tough on yourself too!

If you're like me, as you were younger, you probably made Depend products the butt of many jokes. As I get older, I can tell you, it's no longer a laughing matter. I don't have any bladder control problems that I currently have to worry about. I also don't know of anyone in my immediate connections that have that issue. Older guys may also experience erectile dysfunction and other health conditions so they should see their doctor regularly.

I would imagine statistically that I should know someone that has to consider these challenges. Perhaps that's a credit to companies like Depend that make these types of products so that people can continue living their lives without having to worry about the issue. That's a good thing for people.

If you'd like more information about Depend, you can visit their website, hear real stories from customers or request a free sample.

If you still consider yourself "young", just be aware it won't always be like that. If you're "older", know there's things you can do to take control of some of these issues and get back to living. Keep it up and take it easy. You've earned it!

A Healthier Me, A Healthier Mouth

crest-pro-health-mouth-rinseIn the last few weeks (maybe it's been a couple of months now) my wife and I have been working on improving our health. Many would look at what we're doing as just being a diet, but I look at it more as just trying to be smarter about how I take care of my body. Because honestly, I haven't really put much intentional effort into that task in the last 30 years.

One of the areas I've decided to refocus my efforts has been on my dental care. Growing up I remember numerous people telling me I had nice teeth. They were straight. No odd gaps. No odd shapes. With that came the encouragement to take care of them. In addition to regular brushing of teeth, you may also bring your kids to the dental office for Dental Cleaning. Those who have missing teeth may also have a full, bright smile with the help of dental implants.

I've always gone to the dentist twice a year and brushed regularly. Sometimes I would use mouthwash and I would rarely ever floss. What is it about flossing that's so annoying? In all my efforts though, I was never real disciplined about my efforts. I'm trying to change that.

I saw an opportunity to give Crest Pro-Health Invigorating Clean Multi-Protection Rinse a try and decided I'd add that to regimen. In the past I'd used Scope or Listerine, but had never tried Crest. Although not a part of this promotion, I also added Crest's Pro-Health tooth paste to my efforts as well.

I've been using these products for the last couple of weeks and I think I can already tell a general difference in the health of my teeth, gums and mouth. The obvious results of fresher breath is there, but my mouth also feels cleaner while also having germs killed that can cause gum infections and even periodontal disease.

I've still got a couple more weeks to go for this campaign before it's over, so I'll have another follow-up post at the end of everything. But I can tell you right now. Even when the campaign is over, I think I'll be keeping these new, improved habits of mine on the list of actions to take for a healthier me.

Note: I wrote this review while participating in a test drive campaign by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of Crest and received a sample to facilitate my candid review. Mom Central Consulting sent me a gift card to thank me for taking the time to participate.
